Romans 8

1. No guilt hangs over the head of those who are in Christ Jesus.

God says we are not guilty of the evil things we have done because they are covered by the blood of Jesus.

It is important to know that any voice which accuses us is not from God. Revelation 12:10

2. Because the law of the Spirit of life in Romans Chapter Six has set you free from the law of sin and death in Romans Chapter Seven.

When we try to obey some rules we are trying to do something for God, but when we listen to God's Spirit we are letting God do something for us.

3. Because the law was never able to make us good because human nature cannot be made good by law. But God has taking care of this by sending His own Son to live in a body which was like our sinful human bodies and because He was an offering for sin, He did away with the sinful nature that a human body has.

Jesus lived exactly in human flesh. He was not a spirit as some cults say. He was in a body of flesh but not in sinful flesh.

See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. Luke 24:39

4. This makes us able to keep the requirements of the law because now we do not walk in the flesh, but by obeying the reminders of the Spirit.

Paul is not saying that there are Christians who walk in the flesh. He is saying that we no longer make it a habit to do what our flesh wants but we listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit to keep us on the right path.

5. Because those who live in the flesh keep their minds on the things of the flesh, but a spiritual man keeps his mind on the things of the Spirit.

Anyone who does not want to win this invisible war is doing this because they want to be in control of their own life.

6. The mind that is set on the flesh experiences death. The mind is set on the Spirit experiences real life and peace.

We are fighting an invisible war. You are asking for trouble in your life if you think that you can make peace with the devil and say, “Let let us just leave each other alone. I will not fight against you if you do not fight against me.”

7. Because the mind that is set on the flash is working against God, and is not surrendered to the purpose of God because it is not able to surrender.

If you really want to walk in the Spirit you are the only one who can stop yourself. Take the first step and admit where you are wrong and keep going.

8. Men who think this way are not able to please God.

When you decide to live in a way that is pleasing to God, you will have a life that is pleasing to you also.

9. If God's Spirit finds a home in inside of you then you are not in the flesh, but you are in the Spirit. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

Some people teach that you do not have the Holy Spirit, unless you receive a second blessing. This verse shows us that you cannot be in Christ if you do not have his Spirit. We do not need one or two blessings but thousands.

Keep on being filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18

For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:11

10. If Christ lives in you then His presence means that your sinful nature is dead, but your spirit is alive because He makes you clear before God.

It is as if we live our life in a dead body that wants to do what it wants. If we give the Spirit permission, then the Spirit will control our life.

11. When the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of you He will use that same Spirit to give life to your body because the Spirit has a home inside of you.

The solution to this problem is that God's resurrection power even changes the way our body behaves.

12. We have no reason to obey the flesh or to live for the flesh.

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are against each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Galatians 5:17

13. That way of living needs to spiritual death, but if you put to death the things that the body wants to do you will live.

Why pay a debt that has already been paid?

14. All the ones who follow the leading of God Spirit are the sons of God.

We cannot win this war by walking around saying, "I want to be good. I want to think good thoughts. I want to do good things."

The only way we can win is by listening to God speaking to us in His Word and asking Him to show us what to do.

15. You have not been given spirit of a slave who is afraid, but you have been adopted as sons and this is why we cry out, “Father! Father!”

We are not following some religion that was started by men. We should not be afraid to face anything because we are legally adopted members of God's own family.

16. The Spirit Himself gives witness inside of our spirit that we are the children of God.

We received God's Spirit when we were saved, not later A verse nine says, we are not His if we do not have His Spirit.

17. Think about what this means, if we are His children, then everything that Christ has inherited belongs to us! So if we share in His sufferings we will also share in His glory.

In Paul's day, an adopted child was seen as someone who already owned everything that his father had.

18. In my opinion, whatever we are going through now is nothing compared to the glory that God has waiting for us.

We remind ourselves that the war we are fighting is not always going to be this way.

19 – 22

In fact, all of creation is crying out and waiting for the sons of God to come into their inheritance.

Creation has been made weak, against its own will, because of God's purpose, but it still has hope.

This confidence is that in the end, all of creation will be rescued from destruction and have a share in the freedom and glory that belongs to the children of God.

We know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth until now.

Before Adam sinned there were no thorns. Creation will go back to the normal way that things were in the garden when God creates a new earth. The curse was not with without hope. Genesis 3:17 – 19

23. We also have the down – payment of the Spirit, even as we cry out inside of ourselves while we wait for our adoption and the resurrection of our body.

First fruits means a down – payment of what is coming. The beautiful fruit of the spirit that we see now is just a taste of what we will see someday.

24 – 25

We have been saved by trusting. Trusting means looking forward to something that you do not have yet. If a man already has something he does not need to trust that someday he will get it.

But if we keep trusting for something that we do not have yet, then this teaches us to wait patiently.

This kind of waiting can only come because of confidence. God spirit inside of us convinces us that we can be confident.

26 – 27

The Spirit also helps to carry our weakness. For example, we do not know how to pray like we should, but the spirit inside of us is praying for us with cries that cannot find words. And He who searches the heart knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit prays for the will of God.

Sometimes we do not even understand why we do some things. So how can we pray about this? We are not always sure of what God's will is but the Holy Spirit prays for the exact purpose of God's will in our lives.

28. We know that those who love God and who accepted His call, and are fitting into His plans will have everything work together for their good.

Nothing evil can keep on working against us. This is not true for unbelievers. We say, "How could God let this happen to me?" God takes what the devil does and turn it into our good. Will you believe this? If you believe it God will change your life.

29. God planned for them to be formed into the image of His son, who was the first one to show how to live this way.

Calvin said there is a call that is not according to His purpose for those who are not specifically chosen to be saved but the truth is that God planned for us to be formed into someone who lives as Christ lived  – not to be a robot.

30. God planned that anyone who accepted His call would be made clear before Him, and He also gave them glory.

When we accepted His call His court said, "Not guilty!"

31 – 32

What is there left to say? If God is on our side who can ever be against us? If God did not hold back from giving His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, can we not trust such a God to give us everything else that we possibly can need?

Who can stand against us? Nobody! It cannot be that He does not love us. He will give us everything we need!

Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Matthew 6:8

33. Who would dare to accuse the ones God has called for His own? God is the one who judges.

Why would God accuse us when he is the one who has forgiven us and helped us to stand in the clear before him?

The only ones who dare to accuse us are the devil and ourselves. When the devil brings his accusations God stops him and answers him for us.

34. Who can accuse us? Jesus is the One who died for us and was raised, and is at the right hand of God, praying for us!

I also do not accuse you; go, and sin no more. John 8:11

35. Who can take us away from the love of Christ? Can trouble, pain, persecution? What if we do not have enough clothes or food or our lives are in danger or a sword is used against us?

Would that mean that He does not love us anymore? Would that mean that He has given up on us?

36. As the Psalm says, “For Your sake we are killed all day long we are counted as sheep to be killed.”

We must be ready to face death at every moment of the day. Psalm 44:22

37. In all these things we are more than conquerors because of Him who has proven His love for us.

This means that we have already won the battle before we start!

A conqueror destroys a city, but we do more than that. Elisha conquered an army, but then he fed them and let them go. 2 Kings 6:22

He who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. Proverbs 16:32

38. I am sure that neither life nor death, or messenger from heaven, or demons or things that are happening today, or things that might happen tomorrow,

The Bible does not promise an escape from all the bad things in the world. If it did, then everybody would want to become a Christian so that they could escape all the bad things that might happen to them. Some people have said with their mouths that they are Christians, hoping that God will protect them. What we need is forgiveness from the guilt of our past and our present. Notice that the past is not even mentioned in this list.

39. Or something that is too high for us, or something that is too deep for us, or anything that has been created, can take us away from the love of God which He showed us when Jesus died for us!

I will never fail you. I will never leave you. Hebrews 13:5
