Luke 3

1. It was the fifteenth year of the rule of Tiberius Caesar. These men were under Caesar: Pontius Pilate was the ruler of Judea. Herod was the ruler of Galilee. Philip, Herod’s brother, was the ruler of Iturea and Trachonitis. And Lysanias was the ruler of Abilene.

The dates of the rule of these men fit with the years that Jesus lived. Luke was careful to check on these things and you can check and you will find that these things happened exactly when Luke says they did.

2 – 3

Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time, a command from God came to John son of Zechariah. John was living in the desert. He went all over the area around the Jordan River and preached to the people. He preached a baptism of changed hearts and lives for the forgiveness of their sins.

God comes to earth and He does not send an important person to prepare the way for Him. God uses people that we do not think He will use. Jews do not get baptized but they baptize non-Jews who want to become believers. John is telling them that they also should be baptized to show that they are turning from evil and setting themselves apart for God.

God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong. 1 Corinthians 1:27

4 – 6

As it is written in the book of Isaiah the prophet: “This is a voice of a man who calls out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way for the Lord. Make the road straight for him.

Every valley should be filled in. Every mountain and hill should be made flat. Roads with turns should be made straight, and rough roads should be made smooth. And all people will know about the salvation of God!’”

God can use us to get people ready to invite Jesus into their lives. Sometimes there are crooked things in their lives. We can show them how these things can be healed by telling them how Jesus has healed us and others! Isaiah 40:3-5

7 – 9

Crowds of people came to be baptized by John. He said to them, “You poisonous snakes! Who warned you to run away from God’s anger that is coming? You must do the things that will show that you really have changed your hearts.

Do not say, ‘Abraham is our father.’ I tell you that God can make children for Abraham from these rocks here. The ax is now ready to cut down the trees. Every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

The Jews were always thinking that God would never leave them because they came from the line of Abraham. God did not leave them but they left Him. We need to call evil by its name and not try to make it sound normal.

10 – 11

The people asked John, “What should we do?” John answered, “If you have two shirts, share with the person who does not have one. If you have food, share that too.”

Find ways to give to other people. Think of some small thing that you can bring to someone to show them that God is thinking of them!

12 – 14

Even tax collectors came to John to be baptized. They said to John, “Teacher, what should we do?” John said to them, “Do not take more taxes from people than you have been told to take.”

The soldiers asked John, “What about us? What should we do?” John said to them, “Do not force people to give you money. Do not lie about them. Be satisfied with the pay you get.”

These were Jewish soldiers who sometimes worked with the tax collectors to make people give more money than they had to. John is saying, “Be honest and stay in the job you have been called into!”

15 – 16

All the people were hoping for the Christ to come, and they wondered about John. They thought, “Maybe he is the Christ.”

John answered everyone, “I baptize you with water, but there is One coming later who can do more than I can. I am not good enough to untie His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

We are filled with the Spirit who also burns away anything in us that needs to be taken out of our lives.

17 – 18

He will come ready to clean the grain. He will separate the good grain from the chaff. He will put the good part of the grain into his barn. Then He will burn the chaff with a fire that cannot be put out.” And John continued to preach the Gospel, saying many other things to encourage the people.

The grain was thrown in the air many times until the bad parts were separated from the good. When a king is coming all the people get together and clean the streets and their houses. We should make sure that our hearts are clean when we come before God.

19 – 20

But John spoke against Herod, the governor, because of his sin with Herodias, the wife of Herod’s brother. John also criticized Herod for the many other evil things Herod did. So Herod did another evil thing: He put John in prison.

We speak God’s Word even to people who are not really listening. We pray that something of what is shared will go into their spirit and set them free. If a man has opened his life to a demon, such as the spirit of adultery, then he will not be able to hear the Word with his spirit because the demon will make him deaf to the things of God.

The man who commits adultery is a complete fool, and he destroys himself. Proverbs 6:32

21 – 22

When all the people were being baptized by John, Jesus also was baptized. While Jesus was praying, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on Him. The Spirit was in the form of a dove. Then a voice came from heaven and said, “You are My Son and I love you. I am very pleased with You.”

The people may not have understood the voice of God speaking. There was another time that God spoke from heaven, and people just thought it was thunder.

23. When Jesus began to teach, he was about 30 years old. People thought that Jesus was Joseph’s son. Joseph was the son of Heli.

Luke is showing us the ancestors of Mary. Jesus was not born from the line of Joseph. Jesus had to grow up with people thinking that His parents were immoral. The Jewish leaders did not understand that the Messiah was to be born of the seed of a woman. See Genesis 3:15.

35. Nahor was the son of Serug. Serug was the son of Reu. Reu was the son of Peleg. Peleg was the son of Eber. Eber was the son of Shelah.

Luke shows that we all come from Adam.
